Phonics

Intent

At St Germans, we value reading as a key life skill and are dedicated to enabling our pupils to become lifelong readers. We are passionate about giving every child the skills needed to decode and comprehend texts in order to read fluently and with enjoyment.

At St Germans Primary School, we use a synthetic phonics programme called Read, Write, Inc. This scheme is a consistent, rigorous and dynamic, literacy programme that teaches every child to read. Children quickly learn to blend letter sounds together, following a fun and effective programme. RWI has been proven to be a very successful method, of teaching every child to read and write using phonics. All children in Years R to 2 follow the programme for their reading scheme. To ensure progress in reading, all children are assessed every half term by the phonics leader. These assessments allow practitioners to regroup the children and place them in small phonics groups to ensure every child is given the correct teaching for their ability. Children's home reading books are matched to their phonics understanding to ensure progress in reading.
