How do I help my child to read?

"How do I help my child read at home? I wasn't taught phonics when I was in school!"

Don't worry you are not alone. We are here to support and help you. The first thing you need to know is that all letters have letter names and letter sounds. We call these sounds phonemes. The way we write them is called a grapheme. Watch the video below to help you practise saying the correct phonemes.

Now that you know some sounds we can start to segment and blend sounds to read words.

In school we call this Fred talk (Fred is a frog who can only talk in sounds, the children repeat back the sounds and then blends the sounds to read the word)
