Reading at Home

At St Germans, we follow the Read Write Inc phonics scheme to support our children to read.

When your child has learnt all the set 1 sounds and can blend three sounds they will be given sound blending books. Watch the video below to see how to help your child to read these books.

After your child has read the blending books they will move onto the Read Write Inc colour band books. The children's book bag books directly relate to the phonics which they are learning in class. Children are expected to read these books three times, over the course of three days.

Day 1 – Focus on allowing your child to decode the words. To help your child to do this use the phrase special friends, Fred talk and read the word. (Special friends – spot digraphs and trigraphs.  Fred talk - ask your child to sound out the word)

Day 2- The second time, they are developing their fluency (fluency is defined as the ability to read with speed, accuracy, and proper expression).

Day 3 - Third time they develop their reading comprehension. There are questions in the back of the book to ask your child after their third read.

In order for this program to work, the children must have their book bags in school every day. Books will be changed on a Monday and Thursday. Please ensure that you record the name of the book and the dates on which the book was read in their Reading record.

Library Books

Children will also be given the opportunity to choose a book of their choice from the library each week. Please ensure they are returned to school on a Friday for them to choose a new book for the weekend.
