Special Educational Needs

Welcome to the SEND and Inclusion Pages of St Germans Primary School Website.

We are an inclusive school and we are very proud of our welcoming, supportive ethos and our skilled, highly trained teachers and support staff who work hard to make sure that every single child in our school achieves their potential.

Our Special Needs Co-ordinator is Miss A Beaman

SEN and Disabilities (SEN or SEND)

At St Germans Primary School we take children's individual educational needs very seriously. We understand that not every child learns in the same way, nor at the same pace. At our school, children with SEN will be categorised under the four broad areas:

Communication and Interaction - this includes speech, language and communication needs and Autistic Spectrum Disorder.

Cognition and Learning - this includes specific learning difficulties.

Social, Emotional and Mental Health.

Sensory and or Physical Needs - this includes visual and hearing impairments.

The SEND Code of Practice: 0 to 25 Years

DfE SEND Code of Practice

This statutory code contains:

  • details of legal requirements that must be followed without exception
  • statutory guidance that must be followed by law unless there’s a good reason not to

It explains the duties of local authorities, health bodies, schools and colleges to provide for those with special educational needs under part 3 of the Children and Families Act 2014.

The code, which applies to England, is for:

  • headteachers and principals
  • governing bodies
  • school and college staff
  • special educational needs (SEN) co-ordinators
  • early years providers
  • other education settings
  • local authorities

Our Plan

For most of children who have SEND, their needs can be met within the classroom with quality teaching and clear adaptations. For those who require additional support or a more specific type of support, we will involve outside agencies such as Educational Psychologists and Speech and Language therapists.

We have a number of specific Special Educational Needs Teaching Assistants. They will aim to help those within the classroom who need help in certain areas of the Curriculum such as maths and English.

St Germans School Padlet - A collection of useful SEN information.

If you have any concerns about your child’s health and wellbeing or are looking for information on support available to parents and families, Miss Beaman has created a ‘padlet’ of useful information to guide and support you.

We will be looking to link this in to our school website, but in the meantime please use the web link below.

Complaints Procedures

If you are concerned about the provision for SEND at St Germans Primary School, you should contact the Headteacher in the first instance. Should you not be happy with the outcome, the complaint should be put in writing to the School Governor with responsibility for SEND. Mrs E Reed is the SEND Governor and she can be contacted via email through the school office.
